　　Halloween is coming!

（先听一首应景的歌~）

　　A carved pumpkin lantern is something you must have during Halloween. But for some Chinese students, to carve a pumpkin lantern is not as easy as it seems. No worries! We are going to teach how to carve one if you follow our 9-step tips.

　　一个漂亮的南瓜灯是万圣节的必备道具。但是对于一些中国学生来说，雕刻一个南瓜灯笼并不像他们看起来那样简单。大家不用担心！今天留学监理网的老师就来手把手教大家如何刻南瓜灯。只要大家按照我们的九大步骤来操作，你也可以做出漂亮的南瓜灯。

　　Let’s do it!

　　Step 1:

　　Buy a pumpkin from your local supermarket or from a farm shop. Buy one that's a good size with little visible damage/marks.

　　Step 2:

　　Draw a circle around the stem(茎/柄)on the top where you want the lid(盖子)to go. Make it big enough to fit your arm and a scraping tool(削皮器)through (a diameter(直径)of about 6 inches is recommended).

　　Step 3:

　　Cut out the lid. Make sure you do so at an angle (tip of the knife facing the center of the pumpkin) so that the lid doesn't fall into the pumpkin. You may want to cut a small notch(凹槽/缺口)into the lid too so it doesn't fall.

　　Step 4:

　　Use a spoon(勺子)to clean out the inside of the pumpkin. Scrape away the walls until they're about an inch thick. There should be no seeds or pumpkin strings(纤维)left.

　　Step 5:

　　Wipe(擦)down inside with some kitchen roll(厨房卷纸). Leave to dry overnight(整晚/通宵)if desired.

　　Step 6:

　　Select or draw a pattern(图案)

　　Make sure it suits your ability. Thinner bits(小块/小片/部分)will be harder to cut out. Pick one that suits the size of the pumpkin.

　　Step 7:

　　Put the pattern onto the pumpkin.

　　Use a washable marker(可洗掉的马克笔)to draw the pattern directly onto the pumpkin.

　　Step 8:

　　Get a pumpkin carving knife (or most normal knives will work) and poke(刺/捅/戳)it all the way through the edge of one of the shapes. Slowly move the knife around the shape following the edge.

　　Step 9:

　　Decorate further if desired.

　　Stick skewers(竹签) into the pumpkin to look like arms or hair

　　Finally, you have a perfectly carved pumpkin lantern. You can put a candle inside, light it and take it to your garden or out of your front door! It gives a touch of Halloween atmosphere to everyone.
